STANDARD THREE: Child Observation, Documentation, and Assessment

Key Elements of Standard Three

3a: Understand that assessments (formal and informal, formative and summative) are conducted to make informed choices about instruction and for planning in early learning settings.

3b: Know a wide range of types of assessments, their purposes, and their associated methods and tools.

3c: Use screening and assessment tools in ways that are ethically grounded and developmentally, ability, culturally, and linguistically appropriate in order to document developmental progress and promote positive outcomes for each child.

3d: Build assessment partnerships with families and professional colleagues.

REFLECTIVE CONNECTION

3a: This NAEYC standard ensures that early childhood educators provide evidence to support the knowledge and understanding that assessments (formal/informal and formative/summative) are conducted to make informed choices about instruction and planning in early learning settings. My Planning for Intentional Assessment demonstrates my ability to analyze content from readings and apply the knowledge of observation, documentation, and professional learning standards in a classroom setting to improve instructional outcomes.  The Literacy Across the Development Continuum assignment exhibits my understanding of effective instructional practices for teaching reading and writing on the developmental continuum between the preschool and primary grades.  The Learning Plans were created to demonstrate my ability to develop mini-lessons based on an early learning standard that are developmentally appropriate and provides opportunities for authentic learning in the early learning setting.

3b: This NAEYC standard ensures that early childhood instructors supply evidence to support the knowledge of a wide range of assessments, their purposes, and their associated methods and tools for instruction.  My Universal Design Learning Plan provides evidence of various assessment opportunities for students to use their own knowledge, practice appropriate early learning standards, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curricula for their learning experience. The Curriculum Planning Approaches assignment shows my ability to make decisions about what, when, and how to teach and be able to connect my instructional material in a coherent way to content goals and teaching strategies.

3c: This NAEYC standard ensures that early childhood teachers give evidence to support the use of screening and assessment tools in ways that are ethically grounded and developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate in order to document developmental progress and promote positive outcomes for each child. My Cultural Comparison artifacts provide evidence of my ability to evaluate and reflect upon varying cultural perspectives and priorities and be able to apply their understanding when working with young children and their families. The Computer Program Digital Media Research assignment shows my understanding that the use of computers and digital media in the early learning setting can be effective in promoting children’s learning and encouraging social interactions.

3d: This NAEYC standard ensures that early childhood educators can provide evidence to support the knowledge of building assessment partnerships with families and colleagues to support instruction. My Preschool Inclusion Checklist demonstrates my understanding of the importance of collaborative services among families and schools when including infants, toddlers, or preschoolers with disabilities in center-based early care and education programs in order to create responsive and effective inclusive environments for learning. Shayla's IEP Synthesis Activity displays my knowledge of ongoing communication and collaboration among team members, including families, throughout the IEP process to ensure that children have opportunities to learn, play, and develop with their typically developing peers, thus creating a positive learning environment for all young children.
